Since moving back to the United States, I have had the opportunity to start working on cars again more. It has been a blast. I have been learning more and more while becoming more intuitive with what needs to happen and how things come apart and go back together more naturally. I recently did the break pads on our Mini Cooper. By the time I got the 4th tire done, I felt like I was really getting the hang of what I was doing. This was the first time I had done the breaks by myself, I had helped a friend and learned only one other time.
What would take an experienced mechanic and hour at most two, took me probably 6-7 hours to do. That is okay, this was a learning experience for me. There were moments where I was frustrated and had to ask for help. I just wasn’t strong enough to break a bolt loose, or I was struggling to put the tire back on by myself. All of this and I wouldn’t changing it for the world, why? Because this is how you learn and this is how you become good at something. As kids we are told, practice makes perfect. Well, there is no such thing as perfect and we all know that but practicing is how your learn and perfect your skills.
Practicing is what I plan on continuing to do and learning more and more about the fascinating interworking of motor vehicles.
